- Teacher Shortage: Many schools do not have enough teachers to meet the demand. This problem can often be addressed by providing teachers’ housing, as many schools are located in remote rural areas and are difficult to reach via poor roads or paths.
- Insufficient Equipment: Schools in Zambia are often poorly equipped. Basic teaching materials such as books, notebooks, and writing utensils are lacking.
- Dilapidated School Buildings: Many school buildings are in a poor state. Roofs leak, windows and doors are missing, and furniture is often unavailable.
- Lack of School Buildings: In rural areas, there are often no proper school buildings at all. Classes are held outdoors or in makeshift huts.
- Hunger: Hungry children struggle to learn. School kitchens can make a big difference. In fact, some children walk long distances to school simply because they know they’ll get a meal there.
These challenges clearly show how urgently the education situation in Zambia needs to be improved. And this is where we can make a difference. We take a holistic view of schools and work closely on-site with teachers and parent committees to determine which measures are most useful and which should be prioritized.
